As the story progresses to the forth chapter of Part 2 in the novel, there is a detail description of Winston’s paper-weight. It makes the readers wonder what is the purpose of Orwell creating this paper-weight for?
The paperweight is a contrast of the world, which under controls by the Party. Inside the world of the paper-weight, life is calm and joyful as Winston describes “The paperweight was the room he was in, and the coral was Julia’s life and his own, fixed in a sort of eternity at the heart of the crystal.” (text page 154) There is no telescreen that watches people’s behavior, no Thought Police who will capture people at midnight, and no poster of Big Brother inside the paperweight. Winston and his lover Julia are the only people exist inside the paper-weight.
The paper-weight displays a contradictory world than the Party. It is also symbolizes the ideal life for Winston.
